What to know about Sleep Disorder?
Sleep is a regular period of every 24 hours when we are unconscious, and remain unaware of things around.
Generally you do not need to think about sleep. This is a part of your daily routine. But most people face some difficulty in falling asleep at some time.
You people must have heard a word - Insomnia, if you are very worried or very excited, then you can be a victim of it for a short time and when your excitement or anxiety is over, everything becomes normal. If you do not sleep well then this is a problem because sleep keeps your body and mind healthy and fit.
It’s important to receive a diagnosis and treatment right away if you suspect you might have a sleep disorder. When left untreated, the negative effects of sleep disorders can lead to further health consequences. They can also affect your performance at work, cause strain in relationships, and impair your ability to perform daily activities.
What is Sleep Disorders
Sleep disease is a problem due to which result is not able to sleep properly and as a result of it, sleep is found in the day and he is unable to do his day's work properly.
Although sometimes it is common in the sleepers to have such problems. But if you have problems in sleeping at night, problems like feeling tired after waking up from sleep
So it is not normal. You can have sleeping sickness.
What if we Sleep less ?
Our body parts work like a machine, the way in which the oil is needed to perform the machine. In the same way, the muscles of our body also need relax and sleep to be proper.
After a day's work, if the body does not get the relief of 7 or 8 hours so, energy of the body to function like a machine is reduced and we get pain in our body muscles.
Symptoms of Sleep Disorder :-
- You Got Sick.
- Your Heart Suffers.
- You Can't Think Positively.
- Your Cancer Risk Increase Like : Breast cancer, Cholesterol Cancer and etc.
- Your Less Memory Power.
- Your Libido Diminishes.
- You Weight Gain.
- You Increase Diabetes Risk.
- You Accident Prone.
- Your Skin Suffer Issues.
There are many different types of sleep disorders. They're often grouped into categories that explain why they happen or how they affect you. Sleep disorders can also be grouped according to behaviors, problems with your natural sleep-wake cycles, breathing problems, difficulty sleeping or how sleepy you feel during the day.
Some common types of sleep disorders include:-
Insomnia, in which you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night.
Sleep Apnea, in which you experience abnormal patterns in breathing while you are asleep. There are several types of sleep apnea.
Restless legs syndrome (RLS), a type of sleep movement disorder. Restless legs syndrome, also called Willis-Ekbom disease, causes an uncomfortable sensation and an urge to move the legs while you try to fall asleep.
Narcolepsy, a condition characterized by extreme sleepiness during the day and falling asleep suddenly during the day.
Insomnia is found in many people so, I am writing it here in details:-
Insomnia - Overview and Facts:
Difficulty falling asleep.
Difficulty staying asleep throughout the night.
Waking up too early in the morning.
"As many as 30 to 35 percent of adults complain of insomnia. It is more common in groups such as older adults, women, people under stress and people with certain medical and mental health problems such as depression".
Short-term insomnia: This type of brief insomnia lasts for up to three months. It occurs in 15 to 20 percent of people.
Chronic insomnia: This type of insomnia occurs at least three times per week and lasts for at least three months. About 10 percent of people have chronic insomnia.
"The best cure for Insomnia is to get a lot of sleep".
Short Sleeper – Overview
Most adults need 7 or more hours of sleep per night and are unable to function well after less than 6 hours of nightly sleep. But a small percentage of adults are short sleepers. They regularly feel alert and refreshed after sleeping less than 6 hours per night. Short sleepers function normally during the day despite their short sleep duration.
A pattern of short sleep often begins in childhood or as a young adult. It tends to continue through the years. This pattern of short sleep may cause others to be concerned. Family members or friends may think that something is wrong. But short sleepers do not need more sleep.
Short sleeping also is different from insomnia. People with insomnia have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep. The overall quality of their sleep may be poor. In contrast, short sleepers have no complaints about sleep problems. The quality of their sleep also tends to be good.
Child Insomnia - Overview
Child insomnia occurs when children don’t go to bed on time unless a parent or guardian enforces a bedtime. If the children are made to go to bed on time, then they tend to fall asleep at a normal hour. If they are not given strict bedtimes, then they may linger awake for hours at night.
Children with insomnia may:
Have no problem falling asleep with an enforced bedtime.
Stay awake as long as possible without an enforced bedtime.
Be allowed to get repeated drinks of water or wander the house at bedtime.
Child insomnia is best treated by having the adult set firm limits. If bedtime is 8 p.m., then the child should be in bed by 8 p.m. There should be no reason for the child to get out of bed over and over again.
You can take away things the child enjoys or create an awards system as an incentive. A more strictly enforced bedtime can be achieved with good success. This will produce an improved sleep pattern and will benefit the child.
Sleep Apnea (Interrupted Sleep):-
Sleep apnea is a common (and treatable) sleep disorder in which your breathing temporarily stops during sleep, awakening you frequently.
If you have sleep apnea you may not remember these awakenings, but you’ll likely feel exhausted during the day, irritable and depressed, or see a decrease in your productivity.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) :-
It is a related problem of the system in which a strange problem arises in the leg and feels like moving it continuously.
This Chemical (neurotransmitter)of the brain any kind of inequality can also be connected, because this chemical help the body to drift away from its muscular muscles.
Apart from this, due to uneven nature of any type of central nervous system, it can also cause foot movement disease.
Narcolepsy :-
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder. In which day time drowsiness and sudden attacks of sleep are encountered.
Despite the circumstances, people with narcolepsy often find it difficult to stay awake for long periods of time.Narcolepsy can be the cause of serious disruptions in your daily routine.
It is a long term condition for which there is no cure. However medications and lifestyle changes can help manage your symptoms with the help of others such as family, friend, teachers. You can help them cope with narcolepsy.
Shift Work Sleeping Disorder (SWSD):-
Shift work disorder is a chronic condition that is directly related to a person’s work schedule. you have a hard time sleeping when sleep is desired, needed, or expected.
Shift workers, good sleep is essential for efficient functioning. Disturbed sleep is associated with anxiety, depression, poor physical and mental health and eventually, leads to impaired quality of life.
A shift worker can work overnight, early mornings or alternate between shifts. These disruptions, especially night work, can have consequences for the sleep and wake states, also known as circadian rhythm.
Shift workers have a higher prevalence of insomnia and mental disorders compared to non-shift workers.
The symptoms of shift work disorder include:-

The main symptom of ongoing sleep loss is excessive daytime sleepiness, but other symptoms include:
- Excessive sleepiness when you need to be awake, alert, and productive.
- Insomnia, or the inability to sleep when you need to. This can mean trouble falling asleep, or waking up before you’ve slept sufficiently.
- Sleep that feels not refreshing or insufficient.
- Moodiness.
- Difficulty concentrating.
- Inability to concentrate or a "fuzzy" head.
- Forgetfulness.
- Lack of energy.
- Irritability or depression.
- Lack of motivation.
- Clumsiness.
- Increased appetite and carbohydrate cravings
- Difficulty with personal relationships.
Non-Medical Prevention for Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) :-
- Make your room sleep friendly.
- Use dark theme wall and heavy curtains.
- Use low light bulbs.
- Avoid Phones, laptops, TV and other accessories.
- Eat small amount of food before sleep.
- Take a short Nap.
- Keep away from alcohol.
- Take regular breaks and minimize the frequency of shift changes.
- When changing shifts, request a shift that’s later, rather than earlier as it’s easier to adjust forward in time, rather than backward.
Non-Medical Prevention for Sleeping Disorder:-
- Drink less water at bed time.
- Include vegetable and fish in your diet and reduce the amount of sweet.
- Try to reduce stress and anxiety by exercise.
- Sleep at same time everyday.
- Eat small amount of Caffeine intake, specially after noon or in the evening.
- Do not smoke or do not drink alcohol.
- Eat small amount of food before sleep, choose food that are low Carbohydrate.
Medical Treatments:-
- Sleeping pills (take as per doctor advice)
- Melatonin Supplements.
- Allergy or cold medication.
- Medications for any underlying health issues.
- Breathing device or surgery (usually for sleep apnea).
- A dental guard (usually for teeth grinding).
