Dandruff is a common scalp condition in which small pieces of dry skin flake off of the scalp. If you have dark hair or you’re wearing dark colors, you may notice the flakes in your hair or on your shoulders. Dandruff may also make your scalp itch.

Dandruff can be embarrassing and hard to treat, but help is available.

Two types of treatments are here:-

1. Medical treatment

 2 Home Remedy Treatment

Medical Treatment:-

The itching and flaking of dandruff can almost always be controlled. For mild dandruff, first, try daily cleansing with a gentle shampoo to reduce oil and skin cell buildup. If that doesn't help, try a medicated dandruff shampoo.

Most anti-dandruff or anti-fungal shampoos contain at least one of the following active ingredients:

Pyrithione zinc shampoos (DermaZinc, Head & Shoulders, Jason Dandruff Relief 2 in 1): This slows down the growth of yeast.

Tar-based shampoos (Neutrogena T/Gel): Coal tar slows how quickly skin cells on your scalp die and flake off. If you have light-colored hair, this type of shampoo may cause discoloration. It can also make the scalp more sensitive to sunlight.

Shampoos containing salicylic acid (Neutrogena T/Sal, Baker's P & S, others): These help the scalp get rid of skin cells. They do not slow down the reproduction of skin cells. Many "scalp scrubs" contain salicylic acids. Treatment can sometimes leave the scalp dry and make skin flaking worse.

Selenium sulfide shampoos (Head & Shoulders Intensive, Selsun Blue, others): It is effective at treating dandruff. Use these products as directed and rinse well after shampooing, as they can discolor the hair and scalp. This reduces the production of natural oils by glands in the scalp.

Ketoconazole shampoos (Nizoral A-D): This shampoo is intended to kill dandruff-causing fungi that live on your scalp. Shampoos containing this ingredient can be used at any age.

Tea-tree oil: Derived from the Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), many shampoos now include this ingredient. It has long been used as an anti-fungal, an antibiotic, and an antiseptic. Some people are allergic to it.

The best strategy is to select a shampoo containing one of these ingredients and shampoo the hair every day until the dandruff is under control.

After this, they can be used less frequently.

Alternating dandruff shampoo with regular shampoo may help. A specific shampoo may stop being as effective after some time. At this point, it may be a good idea to switch to one with another ingredient.

Some shampoos should be left on the scalp for around 5 minutes, as rinsing too quickly will not give the ingredient time to work. Others should be rinsed at once. Users should follow the instructions on the container.

Lifestyle and Home Remedies:-

You can take steps to reduce your risk of developing dandruff or to control it:

Learn to manage stress: Stress affects your overall health, making you susceptible to a number of conditions and diseases. It can even help trigger dandruff or worsen existing symptoms.

Eat a healthy diet: A diet that provides enough zinc, B vitamins and certain types of fats may help prevent dandruff.

Shampoo often: If you tend to have an oily scalp, daily shampooing may help prevent dandruff. Gently massage your scalp to loosen flakes. Rinse thoroughly.

Get a little sun: Sunlight may be good for controlling dandruff. But because exposure to ultraviolet light damages your skin and increases your risk of skin cancer, don't sunbathe. Instead, just spend a little time outdoors. And be sure to wear sunscreen on your face and body.

Limit hair styling products:  Hair styling products can build up on your hair and scalp, making them oilier.

Try not to scratch your scalp when using shampoo. Gently massage your scalp without scratching as this will not damage your scalp or your hair.

Brush your hair daily and wash it at least three times a week. After washing your hair, rinse it thoroughly to get all the shampoo out. Using a shampoo that contains tea tree oil daily may help reduce dandruff. It contains an antifungal and antiseptic and can be bought in health shops.
